Senior Editor, Custom Content

Position Overview: 

At MIT Technology Review, we are looking for a seasoned senior editor with experience in the technology industry to play a key role on the MIT Technology Review Insights team, the sponsored content arm of MIT Technology Review. This position is remote with an option to work in our Cambridge, MA office.  

The senior custom content editor role is responsible for editing, managing, and delivering sponsored research projects. This senior editor will work closely with corporate clients on time-sensitive technology reports, articles, and other research. Ideally, applicants will have experience writing or editing content about technology topics like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data technologies for a smart and tech-savvy executive audience. Specifically, this position includes project management, research and thesis development; developmental editing and writing; formation, execution, and management of surveys and research projects; and designing editorial strategy. 

As a public representative of the company, the senior custom editor will also lead panels, conference sessions, and executive meetings when necessary. The senior custom content editor will be a detail-oriented and client-focused team player who will work in close collaboration with the Insights team, customers, sales, and other internal departments. The preferred candidate is personable and curious about science and technology trends and ideas.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**):

  • Leads custom projects, working with clients and sales team, to forge editorial strategy
  • Edits and writes articles, reports, and other content as a part of custom content projects
  • Manages multiple complex projects at once
  • Creates and adheres to content delivery schedules
  • Pays astounding attention to detail to deliver consistently high-quality content on time and on budget to great customer satisfaction
  • Works closely with freelance writers, designers, and in-house colleagues on content development, from brainstorming and finalizing theses and outlines to drafts to creating visualizations and publication
  • Helps manage online content production on technologyreview.com, including publishing content
  • Builds surveys internally, working with colleagues on questionnaire development or with external research partners
  • Develops guidelines and processes to ensure consistent quality
  • Develops processes to streamline content production

Other duties as needed or required. 

Supervision Received: The senior custom content editor will report to the director of custom content, and work closely to lead delivery of MIT Technology Review Insight’s custom content.    

Supervision Exercised: The senior editor for custom content will assign tasks to freelancers, team members, and interns.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and demonstrable professional experience. 
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience required in content strategy, journalism, publishing, editing, specifically creating custom content 
  • Proven expertise in writing and editing and making complex topics palatable to a broad audience  
  • Public speaking skills 
  • Excellent client management skills 
  • Experience leading executive communications
  • Experience in technology industry
  • Experience delivering time-sensitive projects
  • Superb time management skills and hawk-like attention to detail 
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills 
  • Expert knowledge of content development processes 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Familiarity with Associated Press style
  • Technical experience with various platforms, including content management systems (WordPress) and survey development
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace, Slack, and Adobe Acrobat

We’re a hybrid newsroom. It is a plus if you are based in or near Cambridge, Mass. and can work in our main office on MIT’s campus at least one day a week, with the freedom to work remotely the rest of the time.
